Being an integral part of an early stage startup and being there grinding it out each and every day, there is a great learning that makes you stronger, shapes you and teaches you the true meaning of what "life" is.
I've had my share of ups and downs, laughs and cries, happiness and anger. The way in which you handle yourself is what ultimately matters. As you travel the entrepreneurial journey, it becomes necessary to stay on top of you game, to stay ahead in the race. There are a few things that I have consciously learnt to do, the reason I say consciously is because in this roller-coaster journey, there are experiences that put you on a pedestal and surround you with excitement, and there are instances where you are under a pile of dirt. Therefore, in my opinion the conscious habits/decisions and activities hep me keep a check on reality. These are also some of the things I have learnt from my Business idols.
1) Never take a NO for an answer.
A lot of times, I believe an Entrepreneurial journey is to keep the door permanently closed to the naysayers. In order to keep your mind healthy and positive, you need to head towards a zone of mental strength, rigidity and confidence. This, I say provided you have done your due-diligence in your area of activity and have eliminated the root of self-destruction. I strongly believe an entrepreneur should never take a NO for an answer. I went through a rot, a few months ago, not being confident with what I was doing. But there comes a stage where you need to sort it out within yourself and then with your partners to march ahead. Once you take a NO, you start accumulating a series of No's and you will find yourself helpless in a trap. To add to this, there are tons of people who will tell you what you are doing is just going to go down the drain, people who don't understand what you go through, people who depress you. Keep your door closed to all these unwanted anchors who don't let you proceed. Stay ahead. Stay Focused. Don't take a NO.
2) Always a step ahead.
Great visionaries who are also great Entrepreneurs in their own right are known for this. This, to me is one of the traits of an Entrepreneur. It is in their character to do more than what one would normally do. It is to go beyond boundaries, to go out of your comfort zone to achieve what you had set your mind to. You need to constantly look at getting better each and every single day. Work hard, work smart. Put in the hours, your business is your baby after all. Don't compete with anyone, but yourself. Stay a step ahead, look at the big picture.
3) Never doubt yourself.
This is one thing I have learnt the hard way. This is where the problem starts, once you start doubting yourself, your start falling apart. When you fall apart, you produce a domino effect. You are bound to kill the confidence you had in yourself and the ones around you. This is also the reason why you need a co-founder so there is someone to share thoughts and pick you up when the time is right. Backing yourself is the most important thing you need to do if you have to rise and shine as an entrepreneur. You will make mistakes, take it in your chin. Hold you head high and walk towards fixing it and ensuring that you don't repeat the same thing. Some times, it so happens that even your co-founders don't understand you. This is when you look for what's inside you. You got to fuel that burning desire inside you and pat yourself. Don't let either you are the ones around you destroy the confidence you have in yourself. Believe in yourself.
4) Stay united. Stay one.
Personally, I feel good to use the word "WE". Just feels like it makes you a more open person.
If you are a startup founded by multiple members, it's always the team's decision that matters, personal interests should always take the second place. Emphasize on the team more than an individual. Enough said. It's always team first. Period.
5) Enthusiasm is the key.
Many companies fail, one of the key factors driving this is the lack of enthusiasm. Well, simply put enthusiasm is the key. You need to remember that persistence is the going to be your best companion. As long as you know that you are in the right path, take things head-first. Be the person who never gives up till a target is achieved. Even when the chips are down, there is a way out. There is always a sunshine you can spot even during the cloudy days. So remember to smile no matter what. Regardless of how you things may seem around you, your enthusiasm will shift gears.
6) Advertise yourself
Pardon the above spooky-hypnotic image. Advertising is something I love to do. Make yourself visible, get to know a lot of people. This helps you in more than one ways. To me, this is one of the important activities I consciously do. There was a phase when I started to feel very saturated. By making myself visible, sharing my voice, I broke that monotony eating me and hence gave me a lot more perspective, was able to gather a lot of insights and grow more! This is an indulgence I wouldn't mind at any given point.
7) Take time off
What do the athletes do when they call for a time-out? They throw the ball away, recharge themselves for a short span and get back in business. This is extremely essential for Entrepreneurs. You need to be able to break away from your routine when you realize your are not performing up to your potential to recharge your batteries and get back in business in full swing. This helps you freshen up your thoughts, broaden your thinking and gives your mind some creative space. It's best to keep your mind away from your work when you take this break.
These are some of the things I consciously do to ensure that I stay at my best, I discovered this very recently and has helped me leaps and bounds. Few things you need to keep in mind - respect your co-founders and ensure that your co-founders respect you but make sure you don't demand it.
I am currently in the pursuit of making these conscious decisions turn in to a habitual process, that is when you will be successful. Hoping that this would add some value to folks who are in a phase of struggle. Just a word of advise - Don't worry, just focus on your work, be faithful, dedicated and humble. The rest will follow.
